box color VS. professional color

Just wanted to have a quick lesson on some hair today! I just want to let everyone know the facts about professional permanent color, and why box color is so bad for your hair!

The other day, I had a returning client ask for highlights. Yet, she didn't want to use 'bleach' on her hair because she was afraid of damage.. BECAUSE in between appointments, she had used a light brown box color all over her hair. Now, I know a lot times when I talk to clients about hair color they think I’m just trying to sell them more services. While this may be true it is NOT the only reason, the main reason is that professional hair color applied by a professional is so much better for your hair. I went to school, I am a professional, and I want to explain the difference between box and professional hair color.

There is science behind professional hair color!!

i'll keep this short and sweet, i just want to make sure everyone knows the difference and why it's so frustrating for us stylist's when you come in and ask why the box color didn't work on your hair!!

First of all, box color is exactly that; color out of a box that has been made generic for the masses.  It has been formulated to work on all hair types, so the color that’s on the box may not be the color you end up getting. It will work on almost any hair type because it uses higher concentrations of dye and developer. You're paying $2-$10 on a box of color that you don't even know will work out for you!

*With box color you are applying it yourself. This can lead to not only a mess, but can also lead to missed spots and uneven application.

-A professional stylist has the advantage here. Being your stylist, I know the science behind the color. I take into account your levels and undertones and can personalize a color formula for your hair. I even use more than one color to get to your desired shade. Plus, if I run out of color, I can just mix up the same formula and continue to apply it for those people with longer or thicker hair.

*Box color may be a cheaper choice in the beginning, but color correction from a box gone wrong can be very costly. Also, because of the quality, box color fades faster than professional color. Getting color done by a professional may cost more, but you are getting the expertise of someone who has been trained and know what they are doing!
Why not just spend the money at your local salon and be relaxed all day without having to worry about messing up your hair? In the end, it's totally worth it.

You have to understand the level of your new growth, the level of color that is on your hair, processing time, the right shade for your skin tone, whether its warm or cool, the elasticity and porosity of your hair.

I've heard many clients tell me that their old stylist didn't know what she was doing.. she fried my hair.. blahblahblah. It's not entirely the stylist's fault. It might have been that you weren't explaining yourself as well as you should have. If you have something in particular that you want done to your hair, the little details are important! Explain everything you want, very thoroughly, and make sure you are both on the same page before you begin.

Your hair is one of your greatest everyday accessories. Take care of it and make sure your color is looking its best! Say no to box color!! :)

RIP

Today I was upset about how things have been going for me lately, until I heard the bad news that a friend had passed on last night. We might not have been close, but it made me realize that life really is that short. You don't have time to be negative, and as positive as I usually am, I realized how selfish I've been acting. Shit happens, and life goes on.. So today I promised myself that I'm going to work even harder, have more fun, and stay positive.. cause not everyone gets that chance.

RIP Josh Hood, you were one badass drummer, and metal night at stagger will never be the same.. but at least we know you'll still be watching down on Incineration and drumming along with them in spirit! <3
